CDC: New Update to the VFC Program

VFC Vaccine Stocking Rules

The CDC has introduced a significant update to the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program that impacts how pediatric practices manage vaccine inventory. Effective July 1, 2025, VFC providers are no longer required to maintain a full inventory of privately purchased ACIP-recommended vaccines, such as COVID-19 and RSV monoclonal antibodies.

According to the AAP Article “CDC relaxes rules on stocking vaccines in VFC programthis change is designed to reduce administrative and inventory burdens for providers, especially for vaccines with low demand. However, it’s important to note that:

  • Providers must still refer VFC-eligible children to clinics or health departments if they do not stock these products.
  • The flexibility applies to all ACIP-recommended private stock vaccines.
  • Providers cannot substitute VFC vaccines for privately insured patients.
  • Practices that see children under 19 months must continue to stock VFC doses of RSV monoclonal antibodies at the start of RSV season.

The CDC has allowed a transition period, with full compliance expected by August 31, 2025.
