The recent report from the CDC reveals a concerning trend in pediatric flu deaths, marking the 2024-2025 flu season as the deadliest non-pandemic season on record for U.S. children. Last year’s previous high of 207 deaths has now been surpassed, underscoring the ongoing threat influenza poses to children.
This season’s impact
While overall flu activity is on the decline, the CDC continues to classify this as a “high severity” season with over:
- 47 million illnesses
- 610,000 hospitalizations
- 26,000 deaths
Despite these numbers, only 49% of children in the U.S. have received the flu vaccine. With flu activity still circulating, and pertussis cases exceeding 9,000 this year, we want to remind our members that immunizations remain one of the most powerful tools we have to protect pediatric patients and communities.
